Jenny Bashutski – Bashutski Harvesting Ltd.

After about five months of winter, 71 hockey games between the four kids, countless practices, miles traveled, and I don’t even want to know how much money was spent on rink food, we have been back in full harvest mode here in Saskatchewan since May 12.

Last fall, the weather didn’t cooperate for many to get all of their crop off. We’ve been picking up oat swaths that were left out over the winter. We finished that yesterday and today we are going to give some standing flax a try. It’s been a little chaotic trying to get the trucks and trailers inspected and ready to head south while harvesting but, we are very grateful for these acres! It’s like a little start of the season bonus.

This is what the oat swath looks like after being under snow, usually they’re fluffier. This field still yielded about 80-90 bushels per acre.

In between running kids with school activities and cooking, I’m slowly getting my trailer and house ready. Seems like my list keeps getting longer as I keep thinking of something else to add to it. The spring hasn’t been overly warm and the leaves are finally starting to open…things are getting nice and green here now! We are all looking forward to heading to the warmth of the south and not having to wear a jacket! And I am looking forward to the simple and little less chaotic life on the road! Safe travels to those of you that are on the move!
