Nancy Eberts – Eberts Harvesting Inc.

Last week, I took one of our hired men to Glendive, Montana to the airport as he was flying home for some appointments. Glendive is not that far from the farm really, 100 miles or so, and just a matter of getting on the interstate and heading west.  I enjoyed the drive both to and from, especially because you travel right through the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It is a beautiful backyard for all of us here in southwestern North Dakota and I realized I sometimes forget how lucky I am.

The summer of my sophomore year in high school (like what?! almost 40 years ago) I was a part of the YCC…Youth Conservation Corp. and rode a bus everyday from South Heart to Medora to work in the park and did fencing and other odd jobs. Our biggest accomplishment was the buffalo fence at Painted Canyon.

I encourage everyone to take a trip through this historic park, it is wonderful. I usually am on the harvest trail by now and can’t remember the last time I enjoyed the spring view, with foals, baby buffalo and the greens against the earth tones of the badlands.  Something so simple, yet so strong. The park is graced with wildlife and sunsets unlike no other. History made there!

A former CCD student (she was in junior high when I taught her – she’s now 28) and I am proud to call her a friend of mine! Jen Wyckoff is her name and she has been taking a lot of beautiful pictures of these wonderful badlands for some time now.   I always stop and take in her photos, on FB and am grateful.

Most of the photos I have submitted today are hers (except for the named foals) and, with her permission, I am using them. Photo credit to the “North Dakota Badlands Horse” for the pictures of the named foals.

She has a special love for the horses and some of her photos have been shared and used by the North Dakota Badlands Horse Group.  The horses are named by the Colorado state research team, as well as the North Dakota Horse Group. At the moment, there are about 170 horses in the park and chances are you will see them on a drive through (don’t do like I did and just use the interstate)! I think it’d be great to take the kiddos, try to find the horses and see if they can name them.

Jen’s Facebook page is “Wild West Photography”. Be sure to visit!

Jen is an amazing young lady and loves the badlands and all its residents with a passion.

She also has the cutest little most-spoiled puppy, Etta!

I think, in being at home here on the farm (for a few more days anyway), I gained a new appreciation for what has always been here. So many travel to see and find the peace that sometimes truly is right in their backyards…as Jen would say, “it is well within my soul.”

A shout out to Jen for sharing and reminding me there is beauty everywhere! I encourage you to follow and like her page.  You will all be ready for a trip through the badlands when coming through our great state .
