Lately, we’ve been doing the same as every other harvester…looking for acres.  With wheat acres being at their lowest point in history and unfavorable weather most everywhere, this year is going to be tough.

So…Anders and I set out on a little road trip to find some work and take a few pictures (thankfully he’s a really good sport about pictures like these!)

We gave the crew some time off to go to the lake and as soon as we did, we got a call with some acres! (We should’ve given them time off sooner!) Anders moved some equipment around and I headed to the field. Since I don’t have a CDL, I climbed into the combine and made myself at home. (And trust me, it’s no accident that I don’t have it. If you have your CDL, my hat’s off to you!) We quit around 10 since the elevator was closing, and left about 20 acres to finish in the morning.

Usually, our rule is that everything goes through the grain cart because we have a scale and printer and can account for every bushel, but since it was just the hubs and I, we broke our own rule like two teenage rebels on a Saturday night.

Being in a combine is nice and a great change of pace, but since I was the only one in the field and had no grain cart, it got…umm…a little monotonous. It did get a little interesting when the GPS and I had our differences, but we got it worked out with only a few *choice* words being thrown around.

After we got those acres finished up, we gave the crew some time to go to the Rockies. Since there’s no need to make lunch or dinner right now, I’ve been re-stocking the freezer. Yesterday, we made 40 breakfast burritos and 3 different kinds of cookie dough. (If we don’t get back to work soon, I’m going to run out of freezer space and have to start giving cookies away!)

I’m not the only one that saves grease from Blue & Gold sausage and bacon, right? There are so many uses for it!

But seriously, it sounds like we’ll be moving north by the end of the week to get started on our acres up there. Having a bit of a break has been nice, but I think we’re all ready to get back at it.  Praying for rain and safe travels!
