Alva / June 6-12

We are embarking on our eighteenth year of harvest and, yet, it seems like we just started a few years ago! Oh the memories and adventures we have had puts a smile on my face just thinking about them!

I have spent many hours in this buddy seat.

Harvest is a bit late this year as we didn’t get started until June 10th in Alva, Oklahoma. The wheat is still borderline dry and we only took in five truckloads the first day before it got too wet again after the humidity increased.

The next day looked promising to start before lunch but as the guys were servicing the equipment, it just got more humid with each passing hour. We took a sample and the moisture was 16%. We decided to go finish up a water project that needed done on our property in Quinlan while we had time.

After finishing up with the water tank, we returned to the field around 4:00. The wheat was ready to go and we cut until the elevator closed at 10:00.

Unfortunately, we have cloud cover this morning (June 12) and it is very muggy with no wind. So we won’t be starting anytime soon. That’s okay for now as the MacDon guys are here setting up our new headers. I’d like to say “Thank you” to the MacDon company for being one of the sponsors for the HarvestHER retreat!

We are a small crew this year with our family and one hired hand so it’s all hands on deck again this year.

Colston, 13, is driving a combine for his second season. Colston started in the cart when he was 8.

Riggin, 9, is driving the tractor and grain cart for his second season, as well.

Dillon operates the other combine and Austin and I run the trucks.

In the field, we function just fine but when we load equipment to head to another town that’s where it gets difficult. We have more vehicles then we have drivers so it will take two trips with everyone going back for more. This makes for really long days and very short nights!

Day one on the harvest trail.

God Bless,
