Fall Harvest Update

Amber Dietrick – Panhandle Harvesting

Wow it’s been a while since I wrote. To say this last six or so months have been a blur would be an understatement. But here I am again – and hope to write more often moving forward.

We finished up with a pretty great wheat harvest. We battled some rainy weather, but nothing too major, fortunately. Unfortunately, after harvest was through, it seemed like the rain shut off, the heat and wind turned up and we were parched again. There was a lot of dryland corn planted that took a hit. It seems, as though, most of the milo still looks pretty good and the irrigated corn has been good too, so far.

We started our fall harvest back in September with a quarter of dryland corn; then a circle of short, irrigated corn. We then had a few weeks break before anything else was ready. That gave us time to get our combines all tuned up and ready to go hard again.

Fall harvest finally actually busted loose just this last week. As is typical for this time of year, the first three weeks we “start and go” as we looked for crops dry enough to cut. The elevators are being pretty picky this year it seems, as well, due to lack of storage. There’s not much sneaking in a load or two of “too wet” as can sometimes happen.

We had a week-long rain-out the first week in October. This ended up being a blessing for me, anyways, as both boys got sick that week. I was able to keep them home and get them on the mend rather than running all over the place with sick kiddos. I’m blessed to have two little troopers who seem to handle all the going even when sick, but it was sure nice to be able to just stay home and let them rest it off.

We finally got to celebrate my sweet Gage’s 4th birthday with a party last night (he was sick on his actual birthday). We had many friends and family come and have supper and chocolate cake with sprinkles. (The cake and sprinkles was the ONLY thing he has wanted for his birthday. No requests for toys, games, etc…just a chocolate cake with sprinkles…so that’s what he got!) He had a great night. We are truly blessed with the best friends and family we could ever ask for.

Today is Monday and back to the field we go. So I’ll wrap it up for this update so I can start the hustle and grind of this beautiful new week!

Happy Monday, All!
