Harvest – a crazy we are used to!

Megan Klinnert – Klinnert Harvesting

Hi everyone! It’s been a while since I have written a blog post. Like, almost a year! I’m going to try and do better about that this year. Here is to wishful thinking!

I’m just going to jump right in to where we are now.

We are in the in between of chaos and crazy! We are days away from starting to cut wheat here in central Oklahoma and stress is building. We have been working feverishly to try and tie up loose ends before all we do is think, eat, and sleep wheat harvest. We were fortunate to be able to put up just shy of 300 bales of wheat hay earlier this spring. But that also means we need to get them off the field before we leave for the summer.

Here is Randall and Wade unloading some of our hay. We will use this hay this coming winter to feed our cows and calves.

Our “winter project” list always seems to be a mile long. Most of the time, it seems like Randall marks one thing off and I add two more things to it. I’m just a really good supervisor like that. It also never seems to get worked on during the true winter months. I should really just change it to “not in the field project”.

This spring, Randall had the task of taking the rotor out of our big combine. He needed to take it out in order to replace the cone. This might not seem like a big job but it required some ingenuity and creativity as the guys had to fabricate some things to safely remove it from the combine since that sucker is pretty heavy.

Here is our 8230 with the feeder house off of it just before they pulled the rotor out of it.

The fields are looking very ripe when you drive by them on the road. When you get out in some of them, though, there is still some green left in them. I just “bit” some wheat this afternoon that looks about ready to go and it was still soft. We have warmer days ahead of us and I imagine those berries will harden quickly.

I have been taking pictures of the same field in the same spot all winter to track how quickly the wheat has grown and changed.

I know I can speak for everyone when I say the beginning of 2020 has been crazy! It has made me think about things I have never thought of before. Like…will I be able to take the kids into grocery stores with me this summer? Will they be restricting how much meat I purchase to try and feed a crew? And, even making sure I pack a mask for everyone since some places require them.

I know our world is about to get crazy with harvest but it is a crazy that we are used to and actually enjoy. We are anxious to see our fellow harvesters on the trail and see the farmers that have become family. I’m just hoping all the other crazy that has come with the beginning of 2020 goes away soon!
