Memorial weekend is normally spent in a Texas wheatfield. This year, however, it was spent in a tent surrounded by my family at our pond. We fished, boated, cooked out, went swimming and made great memories.
My parents arrived on Thursday just in time to watch Levi and I put the finishing touches on our MAJOR fencing project that we’d worked on for almost two weeks. It was hot, hard work but it made the finished product that much more fulfilling!
On Friday, we went down to the campsite to mow and set up camp. My oldest sister and her family got there that afternoon and we got their tents all set up, too. We enjoyed hamburgers cooked over the campfire by my brother-in-law, Ronnie. He’s a really good cook. That night, the camping weather was absolutely perfect!
Saturday morning, Ronnie cooked bacon and eggs, yummy! Around 11:00 or so, my youngest sister, Tay, and her family showed up. The kids went four-wheel riding and more fishing. By around 4:00, we’d caught over twenty fish. We cleaned them and then went to my friend’s house to go swimming. Getting all the kids sunscreened was a chore. I felt like I was herding cats! But we finally got there and the kids had a blast! Lots of giggling and splashing went on.
Before we left, Neta gave the kids a pickle juice shot, their faces were pretty funny! We returned back to my in-laws for dinner and a shower before heading off to bed.
However, Saturday night’s weather was NOT cooperative. The wind had been bad during the day even for Northwest Oklahoma but let’s just say trying to sleep in a tent with 35 mph winds doesn’t work. At around 2:30 a.m., my parent’s tent broke so we had to take it down and they spent the rest of the night in my pickup.
The wind FINALLY died down about 4:00. It was interesting, to say the least. Colston, my oldest, and Mersadies, my sister’s youngest, slept right through it! We were all up by 7:30 and after breakfast, everyone went fishing again and caught another big batch.
We had intended on camping another night but the storms were coming in Sunday evening so unfortunately, we had to pack up. We spent Sunday night at my house playing games and watching movies. At around 10:00 p.m., the rain came in pretty hard and we were all thankful we were in a dry, warm bed!
Monday morning was spent watching the kids ride go karts and play. I live five hours from my family, so they had to get on the road after lunch. I am always sad to see them go but this time of year, it’s harder because once we leave on harvest, I won’t see them again till I get home in the fall.
Dillon had been in North Dakota helping our farmers plant so he was not here for the camping fun. But he did get home Monday afternoon and we surprised the kids! He messaged me when he was close so I suggested to the kids we get an ice cream and go eat it on the porch, it was so fun watching them see the Pete coming up the driveway!
Now that Dillon is home, we have been in full-blown harvest mode. He had the combines done in March before he left for North Dakota but there was still lots to be done before we could say we were ready!
It is now June 2nd and all equipment is loaded, but none of our fields are ready yet. So, now we WAIT! It will be here quick so we’d better enjoy the slow pace while we can!!
