Kylee DeBock / DeBock Harvesting

It’s been a month since my last post and we’ve been very busy!

The boys started school on August 24th and have really enjoyed being back with their North Dakota friends.  We do miss having them in the field with us, though.

Austin has been with us all season but with the kids going back to school, we needed more help. So we called Karl, a previous hired hand, and he happened to be available.

So, I am now running Colston’s combine, Karl is running Riggin’s cart and Austin is doing all of the trucking.

Colston is staying very busy after school with football. He practices everyday from 4:00-5:45 and has games on Mondays. The team is doing really good and we have thoroughly enjoyed watching him play.

Riggin is playing his last year of flag football (through the church) this year and is looking forward to “real” football next year when he gets to start playing through the school. We will be extra busy next year with two boys playing sports!

This spring, while Dillon was in North Dakota planting, he bought a raffle ticket from a girl at church and ended up winning the grand prize! Two tickets to the Medora Musical, two tickets to the Pitchfork Fondue Restaurant and a one-night stay in a motel.

We had a rain delay, in late August, so we took the opportunity to use the tickets because the show stops in mid-September and we weren’t sure if we’d get another chance to go.  Dillon and I spend most days together in the field but it did us good to get away…just the two of us.

We enjoyed shopping in all of the cute stores as well as going through the Cowboy Hall of Fame Museum and enjoying a Teddy Roosevelt skit.

Our dinner was absolutely amazing! However, the musical is held outside and because it was raining, it ended up getting canceled so we headed back to the motel and watched a live PRCA rodeo. The plus side to this was that when a show gets canceled, the company doubles your tickets. They refunded us four tickets to use next season so, now, we can go next year and take the kids too.

The next morning, since we didn’t get to watch the musical, we bought tickets to the gospel brunch and it was spectacular! We really enjoyed the singing and food! After the show, we ventured into the Teddy Roosevelt National Park where we enjoyed some fun hiking trails and ended our weekend with ice cream before heading home.

Over Labor Day, we made a trip to Havre, Montana for a funeral.

Conn hired us in 2013 and we have cut for his family ever since. When harvesting in Havre, we camp on the farm and Conn and his wife Debbie would sometimes join us in the field for supper. If they didn’t join us, Conn would always be waiting in the shop to visit with us after we shut the combines down for the night.

I can’t say enough good things about him as he was just such a great guy! His celebration of life was held on the farm and over two hundred people came to pay their respects.  That, too, speaks volumes on how many lives he impacted! He will be missed by so many!

Visiting with family and friends at the funeral in Havre.

On our return trip home from Montana, we left around 6:00 am on Monday.  Dillon wanted to be back to North Dakota so we could start cutting a little after lunch.

His plan did not work out! We were only an hour out of Havre when we hit a deer. No one was injured (except the deer) and the car was not it terrible shape. We couldn’t continue driving it, though, because it broke the antifreeze reservoir. So, a tow truck had to be called. I am so glad my mom had me sign up with AAA because we’ve used it a lot over the years!

My poor suburban

Luckily we were close to Malta, Montana which has an Amtrak station. We had the tow truck driver drop us off at the station. Dillon’s parents flew up for the funeral and decided to ride back with us so they could spend a few days with us before heading back to Oklahoma.

While waiting on the train, we had brunch at the local restaurant and found a dinosaur museum just a few blocks away which we walked through to pass the time.

The train was quite enjoyable, very smooth, seats were comfortable and even reclined making for a great experience.  Wreaking my car was a bummer, but we made the best of it by adding in some family memories!

Our train ride

Colston had a football game on Tuesday after we returned. Because Dillon’s parents were with us, they were able to watch the game before heading home. He put on a good show for them!

Football game fun!

It’s been two weeks since the accident and I am still dealing with the insurance. Why is it we pay and pay and then, when we need them, they fight us tooth and nail! We’ve never had a claim with this company and they act like this transaction is going to bankrupt them. What happened to good customer service and doing what’s best for the customer?

SO FRUSTRATING!

We leased some land from our North Dakota farmer this spring and planted peas and flax. We harvested the peas on July 31st and the flax on August 31st. We were very pleased with how our first crop turned out!

Cutting peas and setting up bins for flax

Weather continues to be pretty good for September in North Dakota and we are staying busy getting as much done as we can while the sun is shining!

God bless,

Kylee DeBock
