06/30/16 – Ulysses, Kansas

DeBock Harvesting

We got moved to Kansas from Oklahoma Tuesday afternoon.

We pulled into the field when we got here at around 4pm and cut until about midnight and not a couple hours later we (I) was woken up by the sound of our camper awning thrashing around, because it would have been WAY too smart to put it in before I went to bed. I jump out of bed and steady the awning enough for it to curl in. Then run outside and grab all my plants (because camper maintenance isn’t enough of a job in itself I had to throw in some greenery to baby all summer) and put them in the storage.

The outdoor carpet is hugging the neighboring camper so I peel it off and weigh it down with rocks from a nearby ditch. The lawn chairs are on their way to the next county over but I decide to cut my losses, at this point.

I head back in the camper and sit in bed shaking and on the verge of tears as the camper is heavily rocking from side-to-side. I try to wake Casey up to inform him he also needs to be in panic mode but apparently this storm was like his personal form of Ambien, out like a fat kid in dodgeball.

Once the realization sets in that I am forced to weather this storm alone, a plan goes into effect: I calculate where the wind is coming from and decipher where in the camper I’d like to be when it decides to tumble over, which in my mind was TOTALLY about to happen. After my plan was in place and mapped out, that put my mind at ease enough to go to sleep until the following morning.

After the long night I had, good thing I was able to sleep in. The next day the boys help me with my daily errands and we work on a few things on the campers and equipment. It also rained that night so we did the same thing today. I think everything is as fixed and cleaned as possible. Now, if it would just STOP RAINING!

Tonight we are putting our gambling nature to use and playing some poker (this gal is so owning the house, btw). Until next time!
