Harvest Snowstorm 2019

Kathryn Doyle – R & K Doyle Harvesting

Last Wednesday, we pulled an all-nighter. It’s not every day that I bring breakfast to the field. But Thursday morning I did!

We were trying to beat the snowstorm that was forecasted for our area. For one farmer, we did! At 10 a.m. Thursday morning, we helped him get the last bit in the bin! Very exciting!! Then a move to the next customer!

The skies were looking like this by Thursday afternoon 👇

Unfortunately, by supper time on Thursday, we were shut down. The snow was coming.

On Saturday morning, the boys started working on an old car hood sled…even adding seats! Trying to make the best of the snow.

This was great fun for the kids!

By Sunday morning, the worst was definitely here! No more quading with a sled! Even using a pickup was out of the question! We had resorted to using the tractor to get around!

Some church services were canceled, highways were closed and, by Monday morning, schools and stores were closed! Even the University in the city was closed.

This storm has most definitely brought harvest to a grinding halt!

But, here in Alberta, we know this can happen – not always to this degree.

Over the years, more farmers have been straight cutting, even their canola. In situations like this, however, you most definitely want your crop laying in a swath. The swath will shed the moisture. When the crop is standing,  it will be flat on the ground after a round of heavy snow. You can use crop lifters and mostly just go one way in the field to try your best to save most of it. This storm, sadly, will downgrade the grain that can be harvested. The quality won’t be there anymore.

In all of this, God is good! Always! Today we are all digging out! The snow has finally quit! Yay! The sun is shining and we should have nice temperatures coming.

I am incredibly thankful for a warm house, love, guys that are willing to put in the time and effort to get the crop in, four-wheel drive, snow pants, mitts, neighbors, kids who make you smile because they love the snow so much,  sun, wind and hope! I’m mostly thankful for God. I’m thankful everything is in His hands! I’m thankful I can cast my cares and burdens down at the cross and He will sustain me. ❤

️God bless.
