Usually, I love the sound of rain. I would consider a thunderstorm in the middle of the night one of the best sounds to fall asleep too…that is, when we’re not on the road harvesting.
Many times over the last several years I’ve awoken to the unmistakable sound of rain hitting the roof of the camper or the rumble of thunder in the distance and then Anders always asks the same question “Did we roll the tarps?” Like I would know! I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that we’ve even made a trip or two to the field in the middle of the night, just to make sure (for our peace of mind, and now yours, they always were).
I almost expect this question when I wake up to the sound of rain. What I didn’t expect, happened early this morning. It was about 3am when I first heard the thunder and the wind pick up. It was my first reaction (still half asleep) to ask Anders “Do you have the combines on solid ground and everything tarped?” I think I caught him off-guard (because this is usually his question to ask), when he said “Uh, ya, everything is empty and ready to move.” I had forgotten the guys finished one job last night, blown the machines down and had everything ready to move to the next job this morning. I did a mental eye-roll when I realized how much my husband was rubbing off on me. Lord help me.

Cort came and supervised Hendre for the day…I’m not sure which one had more fun!
This morning, I found just over an inch of rain in the rain gauge, which gave me a much needed day to get caught up on elevator tickets & receipts and to work on getting the house ready to be closed up. We’ve been fortunate to be cutting close to home, and have had the luxury of sleeping in our own bed (and having a full size shower…seriously, don’t take that for granted!)
Over an inch of unexpected rain last night.
This past week, we’ve had long, busy days in the field, made many trips to John Deere (we’re on a first name basis with the parts guys at John Deere and Harvest Support), picked up our crew t-shirts, and had a “supervisor” of sorts.
It’s been super hot the last few days!
This rain day has been nice to catch up on things, but I’m hoping we’ll have the hot, dry weather we had this last week so we can get moved and get the machines rolling again…so we can eagerly await (and appreciate) the next rain day!
1. Be ready to go at the drop of a hat...sometimes without a lunchbox.
2. Has removed the word impossible from her vocabulary!
3. Can hold a baby, take care of a toddler and drive a tractor or combine all at the same time.
4. Must be able to cook for a crew - large or small.
5. Must be able to read minds.
6. Must be able to banter with a parts man until he realizes you DO know what you're talking about.
7. Must be the entertainment director for those rainy days.
8. Be a wife, mom, friend, helper, cook, problem solver, taxi driver or extra crew hand at all times.
9. Can handle the call that makes you react, "You need what? When?" Dropping everything you're doing to make it happen.
10. At the end of the day say, "I really do love this life".
