Myron and I made a quick Labor Day weekend getaway trip to Rollag, Minnesota. Just the two of us!
We had visited the reunion back in 2012 when International was the “expo” or highlight, so to speak, and we were hooked! But with harvest and crops coming first, this year was our first return (of many we hope).
Minneapolis Moline was the “expo”, or highlight, this year and every one of the unpaid volunteers and members that I visited with said this was THE biggest show ever! (John Deere didn’t even come close)
It was a worldwide event, as never has there been more than 20 actual operating steam threshers in one place at one time! So very cool to see them running.
We enjoyed the parade (which runs twice a day) that lasted almost two hours! Impressive line of steam threshers and tractors, etc…Myron and I enjoyed it!
But that was only the beginning.
A three-hour-plus tractor pull was next for us. Myron said that between the tractor pull, the parade and lineup of steam engines, it was simply the “best kind of pollution”!
Rollag has been going on since 1954 (check out their website …www.rollag.com)
and it just keeps getting better and better.
One of the things we both talked about was the amount of young women and men that were operating the machinery, tractors and steam threshers! This way of life won’t be a distant memory as long as these families, young and old, keep this history lesson alive for many years to come.
I, myself, enjoyed watching the young families participating in the many events and every building in the 1900’s town as they came to life. The ladies and the volunteers were always explaining and showing how things were done and existed back then!
The Ice cream and merry-go-round lines were simply too long of a wait for me (at least 30 minutes). Besides, there was too much to explore!

Today, we are back to fall harvest preparation and preparing to silage here on the farm.

Felt like I was in Laura Ingalls’ classroom.
Beautiful home – ladies making butter. Churned for 45 minutes in glass butter churn! Great-gramma’s ROCK!
Would be a dream bed for me.
One building had several displays of “crafts” and ladies dressed as they would in 1900’s actually making them.
These ladies told me to bring my crochet next year and sit with them. We taught each other a couple of things!
Everywhere, the flag was flown and respected!

Thankful our upcoming corn harvest won’t be like this but appreciate where it began!

Lots of things to see and reminders of how far we’ve come. Myron and I would highly recommend Rollag!
